Patchwork & Quilting – Sampling The Quilt Part 2 – CL031B at the Boundary Road Centre

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course will cover the basics of

  • Choosing – shapes, fabrics, colours and waddings, marking and cutting skills
  • PiecingLog Cabin, Cathedral Window, Curved Seams, Dresden Plate
  • AppliquéingReverse Appliqué, Stained Glass Window
  • Joining – adding sashings, borders, squared and mitred corners
  • Quilting – Quilt As You Go – by hand and machine
  • Finishing – binding, labelling and hanging method

Patchwork – Focus on Cathedral WIndow Techniques – CL028B  Boundary Road Centre

DATE: Starts 11/01/18                       DURATION: 10 weeks

TIME: Thurs 7pm – 9pm                            TUTOR: Louise Mabbs

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course will cover the basics of 10 different techniques

  • Choosing – relevant fabrics, colour schemes and patterns
  • Using – templates and marking methods, rotary cutting and scissor techniques
  • Sewing – hand and machine piecing and relevant quilting techniques
  • Joining – blocks and advice on sashings, borders, bindings
  • Finishing – quilt edges, labelling and hanging methods

Understanding Your Sewing Machine CL044 – Foredown Tower (change of location)

DATE: Starts 29/04/17                          DURATION: 1 day

TIME: Mons 11.00am – 4.00pm         TUTOR: Louise Mabbs

  • Learn how to find your way around your sewing machine and gain confidence using the various stitches, as well as how to clean and maintain it
  • Students will gain a good overview of how their machine works, how to set it up and change settings
  • You will have opportunities to make samples using different techniques and stitches

Patchwork and Quilting – How To Design Your Own Quilt – CL025C     Boundary Road Centre

DATE: Starts 24/04/17                              DURATION: 10 weeks

TIME: Mons 10.00am – 12.00pm *        TUTOR: Louise Mabbs

COURSE DESCRIPTION:    * subject to student availability might be an evening class or on a different day

The course will cover the basics of

  • Choosing – shapes, fabrics, colours and waddings. Marking – and cutting skills
  • Designing – geometric patchwork, repeat block designs and appliquéing
  • Creating – overall designs, repeating blocks or a combination of designs
  • Sampling – stitching and fabrics for your chosen designs
  • Quilting – considerations for hand and machine stitching options
  • Finishing – edges, binding, labelling and hanging methods

Design your own small quilt, experiment with different shapes, layout and colours

You will be guided through the process by a designer/maker with 40+ years experience

You may need to do a couple of hours of sewing at home each week.

What I teach and where

I am a textile artist based in Hove, East Sussex.

I teach patchwork, quilting, embroidery, origami and other paper/fibre techniques

I am currently teaching at PACA – Portslade Academy at Foredown Tower on Tuesday mornings. I hope to resume my home classes when my new house’s studio is functional and will expand this page when I’m able to offer specialist classes again

New classes & upcoming shows

After a hiatus of a year due to loads of family crisis’ (see faithfullfibres.wordpress.com *(*I will add links when I can) my home class didn’t run during 2014.

I did however have a brilliant time as a guest artist at the West Country Quilt * show , which I’ll write about with photos when I can.

I’m due at the ICHF Stitching Sewing & Hobbycrafts *  show

at Event City in Manchester 6-8 February

and Excel in London 27 – 29 March

and The Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham In August

Back home in Brighton & Hove I am now teaching a beginners quilting class at PACA – Portslade Academy Adult Education’s Foredown Tower centre which also hosts a Camera Obscura, on Tuesdays 10 – 12, for two terms, there is currently one place available on the course.

We hope to re-establish the accredited course in September and run a full year beginners course too. There are also ‘Getting to Know Your Sewing Machine’ courses in February and June. Please google the college for info & I’ll add a link when I can get it to work!

I hope to establish more specialist home classes later in the year but my new studio isn’t likely to be properly sorted out for a month or so!
